Cane Creek Cloggers

Last Saturday, the ArtsCenter welcomed the Cane Creek Cloggers and guests to the stage for some old fashioned dance, celebrating some of North Carolina’s cultural history. Guest dancers included the NC Youth Tap Ensemble, the Apple Chill Cloggers, Orange County’s Chi Rho Eta Step Team and Tríonóide Academy of Irish Dance. The dancers were accompanied by The Hushpuppies, a live string band.  A guest photographer, Larry Vellani, was kind enough to let us use his photos for the blog. I can’t post his photos to our site, but follow the link below to his Flickr album to see shots from the show, including some pre-show shots. The show was part of the ArtsCenter’s annual American Roots series, which celebrates the rich history of American musical culture. Check the ArtsCenter’s website for more information on upcoming shows in the series.

Mangum & Company Shout Band

Friday, The ArtsCenter was proud to welcome its first gospel band straight from the House of Prayer For All People of Charlotte as part of the 8th Annual American Roots Series.

This was hands-down one of the best shows I’ve seen at The ArtsCenter, and I’ve seen quite a few! The band had incredible energy that brought the audience to its feet. Photos are below!

The band had four trombones, with Mr. Mangum (left) on lead.

Azure Ray

I’ve been listening to Azure Ray for years after hearing of them through the Bright Eyes/Saddle Creek/Omaha music scene, so I was really excited to see them when they came to The ArtsCenter a couple weeks ago! Here are some shots of the show, which also featured James Husband and Dead Fingers.

Don’t forget that over the holiday tickets for the 8th annual American Roots Series went on sale! Learn more and buy tickets here.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Azure Ray performs on Nov. 18 at The ArtsCenter.

Dear Companion Tour

Complete with some powerhouse vocals and the most extensive set I’ve ever seen at the Earl and Rhoda Wynn Theatre, the Dear Companion Tour stopped by the ArtsCenter last week. The tour, featuring Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore with Lizzy Ross, is raising awareness of the practice of mountain top removal coal mining, which was reflected in their set. The show was part of The American Roots Series which continues through June at the ArtsCenter. Check out some photos of the show below and as always, don’t forget to click more!

Karla Bonoff

Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation.  And in her case, that description is not hyperbole.  During her nearly 40-year career, Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim, commercial success, enduring popularity and the unwavering respect of her peers.  Karla has seen her songs become hits for such stellar artists as Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd and Linda Ronstadt.

Karla played to a sold-out ArtsCenter last night. Photos below, and don’t forget Love to Haiti today!
