Guess that Photo!

Filed under: Music — Lyndsay Booth @ 1:40 pm

So we are trying something new here at the ArtsCenter photo blog, with the goal of making the blog a little more interactive.  Instead of post multiple photos from a show or event, I am only going to post one, without the performers faces. Its your job to try and guess the show and any other details of the photo you might know. Post your guesses in the comments below. In about a week I’ll put up the answer and some other photos from the show! If we get a good response, we will continue to do this every now and then. Feel free to leave other comments or feedback about the game in the comments below as well!

Cane Creek Cloggers

Last Saturday, the ArtsCenter welcomed the Cane Creek Cloggers and guests to the stage for some old fashioned dance, celebrating some of North Carolina’s cultural history. Guest dancers included the NC Youth Tap Ensemble, the Apple Chill Cloggers, Orange County’s Chi Rho Eta Step Team and Tríonóide Academy of Irish Dance. The dancers were accompanied by The Hushpuppies, a live string band.  A guest photographer, Larry Vellani, was kind enough to let us use his photos for the blog. I can’t post his photos to our site, but follow the link below to his Flickr album to see shots from the show, including some pre-show shots. The show was part of the ArtsCenter’s annual American Roots series, which celebrates the rich history of American musical culture. Check the ArtsCenter’s website for more information on upcoming shows in the series.

Mangum & Company Shout Band

Friday, The ArtsCenter was proud to welcome its first gospel band straight from the House of Prayer For All People of Charlotte as part of the 8th Annual American Roots Series.

This was hands-down one of the best shows I’ve seen at The ArtsCenter, and I’ve seen quite a few! The band had incredible energy that brought the audience to its feet. Photos are below!

The band had four trombones, with Mr. Mangum (left) on lead.

Santa and the Allen Boys

Looks like Santa has found a new favorite band- The Allen Boys. The ArtsCenter hosted a series of tailgates prior to UNC football games at University Mall this fall. Check out some shots of the final concert featuring The Allen Boys, courtesy of Tess Mangum Ocana, the ArtsCenter’s concert director. The Allen Boys are a North Carolina based Southern Sacred Steel band and can next be seen at the ArtsCenter during the Southern Sacred Steel Festival, March 17-20, 2011.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Santa enjoys The Allen Boys concert while sporting a new look. He's clearly a Carolina fan.

Azure Ray

I’ve been listening to Azure Ray for years after hearing of them through the Bright Eyes/Saddle Creek/Omaha music scene, so I was really excited to see them when they came to The ArtsCenter a couple weeks ago! Here are some shots of the show, which also featured James Husband and Dead Fingers.

Don’t forget that over the holiday tickets for the 8th annual American Roots Series went on sale! Learn more and buy tickets here.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Preview: Girlyman!

Girlyman, one of my all-time favorite shows at The ArtsCenter, is coming back tonight! Their banter between songs was hilarious, and I think they improvised a song about Barack Obama. Who knows what they will do this time! Click here for more details and to buy tickets, and click here to see more of my photos from the last Girlyman show.

Early this month the ArtsCenter welcomed acclaimed guitarist and singer Chris Smither to the stage. Smither, whose prolific career has spanned 4 decades and 12 albums, has had songs appear in various film and television shows and has toured world-wide.  Check out some shots below courtesy of the photoblog’s best friend, Alex Forsyth.
