Jewelry Making Class

The ArtsCenter’s ArtSchool offers more than just typical drawing classes. Today I visited a beginning jewelry making class.  The class serves as a beginning metalsmithing class where students learn how to design, sand, fill and finish a basic piece of metal jewelry. Another section of the class begins next week for those interested in learning. And as always, a special shoutout to the students and instructors for letting me hang around and get in the way.

A student uses a needle to add texture to her piece.

Instructor Susan shows off a piece she made to several students.

A student observes her piece after putting some final touches on it. Her next step is adding a finish.

A student attaches a tool to the work table to help her make her piece.

A Valentine's Day gift perhaps? A student shows off her piece.

Call the fire department! Susan shows off the torch.

Super human strength? Not quite. After a minute or two under the torch, the metal becomes soft and malleable.

Instructors Susan, left, and Chrissy, right, puzzle over a student's work. The finish was not turning the metal the correct color.

One student observes another finishing up his braided pendant piece.

Susan helps a student with her piece.
